1. Statutory fees under the GebOSt (fee number 221)
In Germany, the administrative fees for a custom license plate (Wunschkennzeichen) are set uniformly nationwide by the Gebührenordnung für Maßnahmen im Straßenverkehr (GebOSt), the fee schedule for road traffic measures. Regardless of the federal state or district in which you register your vehicle, the official rates are identical.
The fee consists of two items: 10.20 € for the allocation of a custom plate and 2.60 € for the advance reservation before registration (12.80 € in total). In almost all registration districts, this fee is only charged when the vehicle is actually registered.
- 10.20 € official fee for the custom plate (GebOSt no. 221)
- 2.60 € official fee for the advance reservation
- Up to 70 % savings on the physical DIN plates when ordering online compared with buying from local plate makers
2. How do online reservation and plate embossing work?
On Wunschkennzeichen24.digital you first check live, in the stock of your competent Zulassungsstelle (vehicle registration office), whether your desired letter and number combination is still available. Feel free to use the question mark ("?") as a wildcard for any character.
Once your order is complete, the plate is reserved in the name of the vehicle keeper you specified. At the same time, we emboss your highly reflective aluminium plates in accordance with DIN 74069, the German standard for license plates, and ship them by DHL directly to the address of your choice.
3. Reservation period & PIN confirmation
Depending on your local registration office, your combination remains firmly blocked for you for between 14 and 90 days (in many districts up to 180 or 365 days). You will receive your official reservation confirmation or PIN by e-mail in good time for your appointment at the authority or for digital i-Kfz online registration.
